What does scaling mean? Countdown #SAFeSummit #16

There are three types of ‘scaling Agile’:

  1. Spreading team Agility across the organization. In most mid-large organizations this does not address the root of their challenges which are not at the team level
  2. Increasing the size of the projects – almost never a good idea
  3. Having the entire value stream be Agile – the right thing to do

In Countdown #17, I discussed the essence of SAFe – those principles that are essential regardless of how large your org is. If your dev group’s just a team, Scrum’s sprint planning can be the intake control process you need. If you org is larger with multiple stakeholders, product management is likely required. A missing piece in SAFe product management

Lean suggests that we work with small batches, be able to deliver value quickly and to drive from a business perspective (typically through delivering value to the customer). ‘Deliver value’ means not just to deploy something but to ensure that value can be realized by the intended customer. In other words, we need a definition for the smallest increment of value that delivers value from a business perspective. In other words, it can’t be too small (we may not want to be delivering all the time) but it has to be sufficient (have all the components (e.g., marketing) required to realize value. How Lean can make SAFe and/or Scrum adoption faster, better, cheaper

I have decried calling Lean “faster, better, cheaper” because “faster” is not the goal as much as removing delays with the result being “quicker”. I also think the focus is on quality &being effective. But in SAFe &/or Scrum adoption, Lean provides a different perspective than the standard focus on certification &frameworks, &maybe “faster, better, cheaper” is the right moniker.
